Screening Algorithm
As you can see, the algorithm can help you use information collected from patient interviews and depression screening instruments, such as the BDI, to determine the patient's current state of mental health, suicide risk, when to consult or refer to mental health services, and when to prescribe medication.

We will explore exactly how to do this in more detail once we begin treating our first patient. Until then, here are some helpful guidelines that you can review.

Click on each item to learn more:

# Assess the risk for depression.
# Recommend mental health consult prior to antiviral treatment.
# Consider antidepressant treatment prior to antiviral treatment.
# Discuss depression prevention strategies.

The relative safety and efficacy of these last two approaches has not been established in large clinical trials, so you should discuss each option with the patient and agree upon a plan. Involving the patient ensures that your plan is based on individualized assessment and discussion of risks and benefits.
