Recommend mental health consult prior
to antiviral treatment
Consult or refer the patient to a mental health
practitioner (if there is no current MH provider), or consult
with the current MH provider prior to considering antiviral treatment
for the following:
• Current suicide ideation
• Currently under the care of a psychiatrist
• History of psychosis or bipolar affective disorder
• Substance use disorder
• Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Serious suicide ideation or suicide plans are medical emergencies. Follow your local mandates regarding possible emergency hold orders.

• > Five times lifetime drug use for recreational drugs
• Positive Urine Drug Screen (UDS) for non-prescribed
• Injection drug use in the past 6 months
• Positive breath or blood alcohol at clinic visit
History of diagnosis or treatment for Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
