Vivian: Do you live alone?

Sonia: I have a cat. She keeps me company and loves to play in the garden when I'm out working.

Vivian: How cute! Okay, do you remember any period of time Ask for recall over short to medium time periods. when you felt really down or sad? Use commonly understood terms like "sad" or "blue".

Sonia: Well, yes. After my divorce about 10 years ago, I felt pretty bad. I was tired all the time and just didn't want to do anything. It was hard to concentrate at work. You know a stenographer really has to focus on writing down everything that is said, and people can speak really fast. I had a hard time focusing.

Vivian: Did you go to a therapist or doctor? Ask about history of mental illness and treatment.

Sonia: Yes, I did see someone. He gave me some pills. They were some kind of antidepressant, I think.

Vivian: Do you know what medication you took? Ask about history of mental illness and treatment.

Sonia: No.

Vivian: That's all right. Did it help you? Ask about history of mental illness and treatment.

Sonia: I'm not really sure. It was just a hard time. After a while, when I bought my new house and began gardening and hiking, things got better. So, I stopped taking the pills.
