Vivian: I understand. I see from your chart that you had interferon treatment several years ago. Sometimes the treatment for hepatitis C can make people feel depressed or make depression symptoms worse. Thinking back to when you received interferon treatment, was there any time that you felt particularly sad or down for no apparent reason?
William: Actually, it was pretty bad. I felt sick and depressed.

Vivian: Do you remember what else you felt?
William: I was tired and run down. My wife said I was very irritable, and I couldn't concentrate. The doctor gave me some medication. I think it was an antidepressant, but I'm not sure. It made my mouth dry, so I stopped using it. After about 2 months, I stopped working and didn't really spend much time with my family. My wife and I started having problems.
Vivian: I see. As I said, sometimes the treatment for hepatitis C can make people feel depressed. Did you do anything that made you feel better?
William: My wife and I went to see my pastor for counseling, but it was only after I stopped the interferon treatment that things got a lot better. Things have been fine since then.
Vivian: Thank you for your time and honesty, William. I will visit with you again soon to talk more about both your physical and mental health.
