Week 2 of Interferon Therapy
BDI Score: 15
BDI Question 9: 0

Vivian: Thank you so much for coming in, William. I am giving you a prescription for citalopram. You need to take the medication regularly in order for it to work. Do you have any questions?

William: How long will I have to stay on this?

Vivian: Now remember, our goal is to manage depression while you are undergoing interferon therapy. Afterwards, we will taper you off, so it won't be too Image of William.long.

William: How will I know if it's working? Do you think I'll need a higher dose?

Vivian: You may not notice much of a change for several weeks. If you don't notice any improvement in the next 2 - 4 weeks, we may need to consider increasing the dose of the medication. However, it's probably a good idea for us to stay in touch fairly often until you start to feel better. I see that you have an appointment next week. We can talk then and see how things are going.

William: What about side effects?

Vivian: Well, most patients don't seem to have much trouble. Some patients have had problems with digestion, sleeping, or sexual dysfunction, but the symptoms generally improve as the patient gets used to the medication. If not, we can switch medications. We will see you in just a week and can talk more then, or you call us before then if you have any concerns. As with any medication, don't stop taking it without calling the office and checking with us first.

William: Okay, thanks. I'll give it a try. My wife and kids do say I have been a little cranky!
