Respirator Selection

The Administrator will select the appropriate respirator based on exposures. In some cases, air sampling may be required to determine the level of contaminants to ensure the proper respirator is selected.

Additional PPE must be taken into consideration to ensure that it does not interfere with the respirator; conversely, it is important that the respirator doesn't interfere with other PPE.

User health and comfort is important when selecting a respirator.  If an employee is constantly shifting the respirator on their face because it “itches” or it is uncomfortable, the odds are that the user will breach the respirator seal.

You must be fit tested on ALL models of tight-fitting respirators you use. For example, if an employee has been fit tested on one 3M N95 respirator, it does not mean that all 3M N95 respirators will fit. The employee must be fit tested on all models they will wear in the workplace.
