Federal employees undergo a medical evaluation provided by the Occupational Health Clinics at CDC. These are performed to ensure the user can safely and effectively wear a respirator in the workplace. It ensures the respirator itself does not create a hazard to the employee. Employees undergo a screening for pre- existing medical conditions. They are also evaluated for
• Smoking history
• Pulmonary/cardiovascular symptoms
• Vision/hearing issues
• Musculoskeletal issues
Re-evaluation may occur under certain circumstances including:
• Employee reports signs or symptoms relevant to respirator use (e.g. , experience dizziness when using respirator)
• When a healthcare provider, supervisor or program administrator deems it necessary
• Observations during fit testing indicate a need (e.g., difficulty breathing)
• A change in workplace conditions
Contractors obtain medical clearance externally. Non-Atlanta personnel typically obtain respirator medical clearance from a Federal Occupational Health Clinic or other provider in their local area. Contact your supervisor or ESHCO for more information. All documentation must be faxed to the Roybal Occupational Health Clinic at 404.639.3166.
