Vivian: Hello again, Sonia. Now I would like to tell you about the Beck Depression Inventory, or the BDI. It is a simple questionnaire that can help me understand what you are feeling and how the interferon may be affecting your moods.

Sonia: Can't I just tell you how I am feeling? I mean, I really don't like tests and surveys.

Vivian: You can tell me how you are feeling, but the BDI helps me understand more so that I am better able to help you. A lot of people get discouraged because of the depression that interferon can cause, and so they sometimes stop treatment. That's why depression management is an important part of the treatment. I don't want to see you become depressed, and the BDI will help both of us manage any depression symptoms that may occur.
