This document is a manual that outlines one approach to caring for veterans who have hepatitis C and a psychiatric and/or substance use disorder. The manual is designed to provide you, and other clinicians, with a framework for working as part of a hepatitis C care team.

Fortunately for many of our veterans, there has been a lot of good progress in the area of hepatitis C treatment. In fact, this progress has been so rapid that it has outrun empirical evidence regarding best practices, especially for patients with complex, co-existing conditions. Because of this lack of evidence, the manual also takes into account valuable clinical consensus and experience.

It is important for you to read and consider the recommendations presented in the manual, but you should also use your clinical judgment whenever making decisions for individual patients.
