Consider risk factors
Next, you should consider the patient's risk factors for suicide. Factors associated with increase risk of suicide include:

•  History of previous/prior suicide attempts

•  Depression and/or history of other psychiatric disorders, especially those associated with impulsive behavior (for example, borderline personality disorders)

•  Family history of suicide

•  Substance abuse

•  Recent death of a friend or spouse

•  Few social supports

•  Experience of violence (physical, sexual, domestic) or time in jail or prison
