Consider risk factors
Next, you should consider the patient's risk factors for suicide. Factors associated with increase risk of suicide include:
History of previous/prior suicide attempts
Depression and/or history of other psychiatric disorders, especially those associated with impulsive behavior (for example, borderline personality disorders)
Family history of suicide
Substance abuse
Recent death of a friend or spouse
Few social supports
Experience of violence (physical, sexual, domestic) or time in jail or prison
