Several studies in other clinical populations have shown that a collaborative approach improves outcome, increases engagement in care, and is cost effective. Although these advantages have not been proven in the care of hepatitis C patients, it is likely that integrating services for patients with complex, co-existing disorders provides better overall care for each patient.

Collaboration between psychiatric and hepatitis C practitioners can occur in a variety of ways. An important first step towards creating a collaborative clinic is to identify one or two mental health practitioners that are willing to see patients referred by you and who are also willing to learn more about hepatitis C. It is important to develop procedures for referral to those practitioners as well as interventions for urgent and emergent cases. A systematic approach to care is recommended and includes the use of screening tools and developing lines of responsibility.
