Managing Antidepressant Side Effects

Drug-Drug Interactions
Antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, can inhibit cytochrome P450 isoenzymes. Citalopram, escitalopram, and sertraline tend to have fewer drug-drug interactions, but they can cause altered metabolism of some opiates (frequently codeine), some benzodiazepines, and over-the-counter medications such as dextromethorphan. SSRIs can interfere with the metabolism of anticonvulsants and antipsychotic agents. In addition, the anticoagulant effect of warfarin can be increased with the use of SSRIs. Thus, it may be necessary to monitor levels of these affected agents more frequently. While not all of these interactions are significant, consider consulting a pharmacist should you have concerns about drug-drug interactions.
